We hosted another successful West Fork Adult Day C We hosted another successful West Fork Adult Day Care™️ session working trails in the Bobcat burn last weekend. The crew put in two long days back to back! So, we had bottomless tacos for the volunteers Saturday night to keep us sharp for Sunday.

After two long days, Gabrielino - West Fork to Kenyon Devore is in great shape across the entire length. We are starting to push up Kenyon Devore with tread repairs and the saw work is about 3/4 of a mile up. We are dedicated to getting this area ready for recreation when the Closure Order is lifted in the future.

Oh, and by the way, the San Bernardino larkspur (pic 7) is going bonkers along the West Fork!
This past weekend @gotukus took some of our most d This past weekend @gotukus took some of our most dedicated crew members for a field trip to @sequoianationalforest for a chainsaw certification course. The pandemic complicated matters for a chainsaw class to happen on the Angeles National Forest for a few years… We had a rare opportunity to go off-Forest for the class.

@gotukus spends time working trails in Sequoia with his friend Brent of @krvmba. He knew of a class coming up and put us in contact with the chainsaw instructor. He luckily had room for a few of us in the class so special thanks to Brent!!

Travis and Tom became new A sawyers and Eric and Carson went for their B sawyer certification and passed! Matt and Brent supported their crews and found the time to do a table project out of a 400+ year old Jeffery pine that was killed in the French Fire. What a weekend!

Super fun weekend working the Gabrielino in the Bo Super fun weekend working the Gabrielino in the Bobcat Closure. Gave the camera to @hannah_g1rl and she did a great job capturing the good times… We camped out at West Fork and made huge progress going towards Kenyon Devore. We cleared tons of downed oaks and rebenched over a 1/2 mile of trail. Some areas are so heavily damaged, we will be revisiting them for years to come. We wanted to do some good work making the trail safer for the possible lifting of the Bobcat Closure in this area in less than a month. The area is NOT READY for recreation traffic and is extremely unsafe in a number of areas. We shall return soon!
Here’s a crazy BEFORE/AFTER sequence of the uppe Here’s a crazy BEFORE/AFTER sequence of the upper spring on Condor. We first started working on this back in December 2020. Before then, users were climbing off the trail down in the drainage and going under a tree trunk (pic 1). The trail had been obscured by years of thorny berry branches and poison oak taking over the drainage. After a little cleanup by @tediseasy (pic 2) the trail is starting to show itself. Progress after Dec 2020 brushing (pic 3). More recently, we did improvements to make the section rideable on a bike and just an overall more enjoyable segment of trail. Going uphill, it had a extremely tight turning radius around the base of the tree with awkwardly placed rocks exposed. Then, if you made the tight turn, you were hit with a very steep and loose incline. We took back the cliff face to soften the turning radius, removed said awkward rocks, and built up the trail tread with all those rocks from the cliff face to soften the blow of the steep exit climb. It is now rideable in both directions! (See stories)
We have been talking about using a repeater for ye We have been talking about using a repeater for years to increase our range with 2-way radio comms. Finally we took that leap when @mtn_resq_rookie from @altadenamountainrescue offered up some knowledge which lead us to Alex over at @mojave.repeater. A comms specialist in the Marines, Alex thought what Lowelifes is up to is pretty cool and he not only donated one of his “Lunchbox Repeaters” but came out to Altadena to go over practical use of the equipment with @erikhillard out in the field. We used the repeater at our last campout at Fox Saddle on Condor Peak Trail. With smart placement, we had comms across the entire length of trail all the way down to the highway. Huge thanks to Alex for the generous gift and coming all the way out to teach us some skills! Thank you!! Erik wrote a article on our website about it - link is in the bio!
Big thanks to @myklenda over at @la.tourist.race f Big thanks to @myklenda over at @la.tourist.race for teaming up with us for this past weekends race. Ever since Mike started the race he has always made giving back to the local trail orgs a focus for the event. We tossed in a shot of Mike and @gotukus at the very first day of trail work on Condor Peak Trail. He’s been supporting since the beginning so thank you Mike!!! It really came together this time now that we have nearly finished our huge project restoring Condor Peak Trail. Even though it wasn’t 100% done, we felt it was jamming enough to get some folks out there to sample the goods! HUGE thanks to @hannah_g1rl @vernor @name_and_number @tlmtwo @hashtagalexkeller for all the help hauling and setting up our remote party (aid) station. We can’t wait for the next one!!
